Walking in the Moment

Mindfulness meditation does not always have to be a sitting still process. Walking mindfulness is a great way to be in the moment. It is an opportunity to allow your mind to acknowledge and become aware of your surroundings and your own body, mind, and spirit as you walk. Begin by focusing on your breath and your step. How do your feet, your legs, your hips, your back, your arms, hands, head, face and other parts of your body feel as you breathe and step. What do you notice about your physical experience as you take each step. As you walk in your breath and become more aware, expand your awareness to your surroundings, what do you see, hear, or even feel as you are walking. Maybe you notice the temperature, maybe a breeze, maybe the warm sun or dampness of a cloudy day. What do you see, the leaves on the tree, the pattern of the bark on the tree, small animals coming and going, birds flying or landing, what else are you seeing. What are you hearing, maybe birds singing, maybe your footsteps, maybe the hum of life carrying on around you? If thoughts of your day creep in during the process, acknowledge them and perhaps think of them as leaves or feathers and send them out on the wind or down the stream for now, knowing you will be able to retrieve them later. As you come to the end of your walk and mindfulness experience perhaps thank yourself for taking the time to be in the moment and thank God for the opportunity to experience the world that has been placed before us. Take a few last deep breaths and transition to your next activities. Have a blessed and safe day.
