Am I losing my Mind? Where did I put those keys? What was the name of that person I met two days ago. These and so many more common questions we start asking ourselves as we get a little older. There are many different advertisements and methods identified as ways to improve your memory. What if Mindfulness Meditation, the practice of being in the present moment and using a variety of Meditation techniques to improve the mind? Is there science to support this claim?
I am always intrigued with the ever-evolving science that supports the many benefits of Meditation on our Minds, Body, & Spirit. So yes, research has shown that Meditation can stimulate changes in the brain in an area called the hippocampus, a region vital for memory. This is called neuroplasticity, potentially fostering structural growth in this region, believed to improve memory. Meditation has been shown to contribute to stress reduction, by reducing stress hormones on the brain and it indirectly boosting memory by combating those hormones. Meditation has also been shown to enhance working memory capacity, allowing our daily cognitive function to be optimized.
